A Legacy Worth Protecting

Nurturing the land for future generations.

At Plantagenet Wines, sustainability is not a slogan – it’s a way of life. As the first winery in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, we’ve always known that exceptional wine comes from deep respect for the land.

Today, we continue to lead with purpose, future-proofing our vineyards and honouring our responsibility as custodians of this remarkable place.

Connected to the Land

Our estate vineyards lie in Mount Barker, a cool-climate subregion shaped by ancient soils, elevated slopes and crisp evening air. These conditions create wines of freshness, elegance and character – but they also demand care.

We take a long-term view: working with nature, not against it and nurturing vine health through minimal intervention and regenerative viticulture.

“We don’t see sustainability as a choice. It’s a responsibility," states Tom Wisdom, Plantagenet owner & sixth-generation custodian.

Responsible Farming

Led by a hands-on team of viticultural experts, our vineyard practices are built on a foundation of balance and respect for the land.

We nurture soil health through composting and cover crops, while limiting synthetic inputs to preserve the vineyard’s natural equilibrium. Water is used sparingly and strategically, guided by moisture-monitoring technology that mimics natural rainfall. By encouraging native vegetation and creating habitats for beneficial insects, we foster biodiversity that supports healthy, resilient vines.

As Vineyard Manager Pete Price says: "When the soil thrives, so does the wine."

Adapting to a Changing Climate

Facing the realities of climate change head-on, our vineyard team is actively trialling heat-tolerant rootstocks, innovative canopy management techniques and adaptive picking windows.

This future-focused approach is bolstered by co-owner Dr. Jo Wisdom, a plant physiologist and PhD viticulturist. As Director of the South West Drought and Resilience Hub (one of only eight across Australia), Jo leads nationally funded research supporting agricultural adaptation across the region.

“We’re using science and practical experience together,” Jo explains. “The goal is to build resiliencenot just for our vineyards, but for the broader farming community.”

Leading With Purpose

We believe sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. That’s why we collaborate with regional organisations and share knowledge across the industry – because protecting the future of winemaking is a responsibility we all share.

“Sustainability isn’t a competition,” says Tom. “If we all lift our standards, the entire wine industry benefitsnow and into the future.”

“We’re not just making wine,we’re preserving a way of life. One that respects nature, celebrates community and leaves something better behind.”
