The team
Our People
Passion, commitment and legacy since 1968.
At the heart of Plantagenet Wines is a team of passionate individuals united by a deep respect for the land, a commitment to excellence and a shared love of the Great Southern wine region. Our people shape the wines, the vineyards and the legacy we continue to build in Mount Barker.
Tom Wisdom
Owner & Sixth-Generation Descendant of Lionel Samson
Tom’s connection to Plantagenet began in 1994, fresh out of high school, when he worked his first vintage after his family became shareholders in the winery. Another vintage in 1997 cemented his passion for viticulture, inspiring a decade-long career in Margaret River, where he gained experience managing vineyards for a major WA producer.
After later roles in finance and strategy, Tom returned to Plantagenet in 2018 as General Manager, fully acquiring the business from his family in 2021. He is deeply committed to both Plantagenet’s pioneering legacy and the Great Southern’s future, championing this remarkable cool-climate region and sharing its story with the world.
Jo Wisdom
Owner & Plant Physiologist (PhD Viticulture)
Jo Wisdom brings world-class viticultural expertise to the Plantagenet team. Her focus on sustainability and vine health plays a key role in crafting wines of clarity, structure and elegance.
“The Wyjup Collection goes to the heart of who we are. These are our most refined and prestigious wines – each one a tribute to Plantagenet’s pioneering legacy as the oldest winery in the Great Southern, and a promise of what’s to come.”
Mike Garland
Chief Winemaker
A dedicated cool-climate winemaker since 1996, Mike Garland brings decades of regional knowledge and technical skill to every bottle. His journey began at Plantagenet with the 1997, 1998 and 1999 vintages, before honing his craft across the Great Southern and abroad in Germany with a focus on Riesling.
“It is a very comforting feeling, that I've 'come home' to where my journey all started,” Mike reflects. “Without Plantagenet, and more specifically Tony Smith, we would not have moved or fallen in love with the Great Southern region and its wines.”
Pete Price
Vineyard Manager
Pete began his career in 1997 as an agronomist with Wesfarmers-Dalgety, where he identified viticulture as an emerging industry and helped expand its supply network across WA. In 2000, he purchased the Wesfarmers rural merchandise store in Mount Barker, supporting local growers for over 15 years.
After roles with West Cape Howe and Howard Park, Pete established himself as a skilled vineyard contractor before joining Plantagenet full-time in 2022. With decades of experience and deep local knowledge, he brings a practical, passionate approach to nurturing the vines of Mount Barker.
Johnathon Watson
National Sales & Marketing Manager
Driven by a deep passion for the Great Southern, its people and partnerships, Johnathon leads Plantagenet Wines’ domestic sales with a focus on genuine relationships – from national category managers to restaurateurs and local retailers.
His journey with wine began in the mid-90s as a retail manager and loyal Plantagenet drinker, inspired by the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, he brings insight, integrity and a collaborative spirit to every endeavour, championing the excellence of Plantagenet and the wines of Western Australia.
