‘Slightly funky, old-school style of wine. “My big fat Greek wedding” was how one judge summed up this big, bold chardonnay.

Plantagenet has been a serious player in Western Australia since the late 1960s. The original plantings in the remote Great Southern included Chardonnay, a varietal not that well known in WA those days. Aged for nine months in French oak, this Chardonnay has a brilliant light gold colour, lovely peach and citrus aromatics, dry full-fruit flavours, subtle oak notes, 13.8% alcohol and good length. Crisp and clean with balanced oak and fruit, this is a very nice Chardonnay at an affordable price.

Spotless, complete and well made, with a ripe perfume of peach, nectarine and citrusy fruit backed by nutty, green olive notes and moderately toasty, creamy vanilla oak. It's long and luscious, with ripe, generous flavours of peach, grapefruit, lemon and nectarine seamlessly knit with smoky, bacony complexity. It finishes long and soft, with a persistent core of fruit. 91 points

The 2008 Chardonnay was fermeted with native yeasts in French oak. It then spent 9 months in 30% new French oak. Medium straw-coloured, it reveals a nose of spicy oak, biscuit, apple, poached pear and toasted nuts. Medium bodied and vibrant on the palate, it has plenty of savoury fruit, excellent balance, and a lengthy finish. Drink it over the next three years.
