Our Region

To the north of Plantagenet Wines are the brooding Stirling Ranges. These regularly cloud-wreathed mountains are one of the few places in Western Australia where snow sometimes falls. To the south is the gentler, but no less imposing, Porongurup Range and beyond is the charming port city of Albany, the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

While Plantagenet Wines was the first winery of the region, the nearby city of Albany was one of the first settlements in Western Australia. Indeed it nearly became the state’s capital city until the Swan River settlement took over in importance and developed into Perth.

Today Albany is a charming city with many original buildings, an operational port, and extensive cycle tracks linking its many delightful beaches and sheltered bays. If you are visiting the region it’s well worth putting aside a day or two to explore.

The Stirling and Porongurup Ranges National Parks are both internationally recognised biodiversity hotspots. The Stirling Range is the only real mountain range south of the state and boasts over 1,500 wildflower species, best viewed during September to October. The Porongurup Range hosts over 71 orchid species and over 50 proteaceae . Both are home to around 80 bird species. There are great walk trails, wonderful photo opportunities (especially for the early risers!) and a true sense of wilderness to be experienced in both these places. Click here to learn more.
