2022 Wyjup Collection Release

The annual release of the Wyjup Collection happens every September and is always a cause for great excitement amongst the team.

This year we are releasing five new wines from the collection, which are;

2019 Wyjup Collection Blanc de Blancs

Very pale straw with a luminous green hue. This is a zesty, pristine example of cool-climate sparkling. The light brioche notes complex, crisp red apple and pear aromas from extended lees contact in the bottle. The tightly wound palate is focused and intense. Comprehensive yeast lees contact imparts a creaminess and texture to the fine-boned natural acidity and crisp fruit flavour.

2021 Wyjup Collection Riesling

Very pale straw colouring and filled with fresh Riesling fruit aromatics of fresh, zesty lime and orange blossom. The palate structure has finesse and purity but has an underlying intensity and focus. Fresh citrus flavours glide over the mid-palate, followed by the wine’s fine-boned structure and power. The length and flavour persistence features strongly.

2020 Wyjup Collection Chardonnay

Medium straw colour with lifted ripe melon and nectarine fruit aromas with some subtle marzipan nuttiness and vanilla top notes. The palate is tightly wound and focused. The natural acidity and minimal MLF provide a firm backbone for the fruit’s expression. The flavour and intensity are integrated seamlessly with the fine-boned French oak.

2020 Wyjup Collection Pinot Noir

Bright Maroon with ethereal, vinous aromatics reminiscent of black cherry and ripe tomatoes with some cashew nuttiness. The silkiest tannins carry a full, rounded mid-palate with dense Pinot character.

2021 Wyjup Collection Malbec

Deep Maroon with purple, almost magenta hues. They are packed full of spicy blue fruits and dark plum aromas, with flashes of pomegranate, dark chocolate and gravelly tones. The palate is a celebration of the variety, super vibrant with a sweet fruit mid-palate and quite masculine, big smooth tannins. The richness and earthiness of the Malbec shines through on the finish.

These wines are the pinnacle of the Plantagenet wine portfolio and reflect the ability to access old vines and fantastic quality fruit that only comes with age. The Wyjup Collection wines are made from estate fruit from our Wyjup Vineyard (1971 planting) and the Bouverie Vineyard (1968), owned by the family of Plantagenet founder Tony Smith.

The attention to detail in the vineyard, the selection of the absolute best parcels of fruit, investment in French oak, and excellence in winemaking practices overseen by Chief Winemaker, Mike Garland, ensure that wines in the Wyjup Collection are of consistent and outstanding quality.

We are particularly excited to release our first straight Malbec from a 50-year-old planting at our Wyjup Vineyard. This wine exhibits spicy blue fruits and dark plums with vibrant mid-palate and masculine tannins. Only 70 Dozen of this wine have been made this year.

Volumes in the Wyjup Collection are tiny, fast becoming collectable wines to be enjoyed as the year progresses.

Vintage 2022

The wines from vintage 2022 are progressing well in tank and barrel, with some of the earlier release varieties bottled and ready for enjoyment.

Overall the vintage conditions were conducive to producing excellent quality wines with great ageing potential in Shiraz & Cabernet.

A wet winter in 2021 ensured that dams were full and soil moisture was abundant. As the season progressed, there was good even canopy growth after a delayed start and a moderate crop load due to a low fruit set, which ensured that ripening potential was high.

Some very hot days during January and February were challenging, and we were thankful that irrigation water could be used to supplement our natural rainfall patterns and keep the canopies healthy.

The fruit was harvested around two weeks later than usual, allowing for additional hang time to ensure that the sugar ripeness was balanced with phenolic and flavour ripeness.

This year we have paid particular attention to the Wyjup Collection wines in crafting some unique expressions of the oldest estate vineyards. The Wyjup Collection Chardonnay will be a prime example of the ability to target different sections and harvest times with small parcels of fruit to build complexity and sophistication into the wines.

Halliday Wine Companion 2022

The Wine Companion is recognised as the benchmark for Australian wine, identifying the ‘best of the best’ from the wine industry, focusing on the uniqueness in every wine, whether it be for good or ‘just missed the mark’, the prestigious wine panel will take the time to give their honest opinion.

This year the tasting panel was comprised of regional specialists across five states, with the team expanding to seven. For the first time, the awards were judged collaboratively by the entire tasting team, coming together in Victoria in March to review the shortlist produced from over 9,000 Australian wines. The tasting panel set a record with 60 per cent more new wineries reviewed for this edition than last year. – FoodMag.com.au

Always eagerly anticipated and never disappointing as wine lovers, industry and wineries await the winners – albeit zooming in online for the past two years. We have retained our 5 Red-Star Winery Rating, and are immensely proud of our scores again this year.

ICON 2018 Lionel Samson Cabernet Sauvignon
“The first release of this premium cabernet, named after one of the founders Lionel Samson. Fruit is sourced from the Wyjup vineyard, planted in 1971. Salted cassis and blackberry pie on the nose and palate. This is supple and elegant and although concentrated, it doesn’t have the palate weight of the shiraz. This is not a bad thing, just interesting. Elegance and longevity live here side by side. A masterful first release, and quite delicious now or in decades to come.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021 (97 points + special value)

ICON 2018 Tony Smith Shiraz
“Named after Tony Smith, founder of Plantagenet wines. The source vines from the Bouverie vineyard were planted in 1968. Only made in exceptional years. Densely packed with concentrated, reverberating fruit that ripples across the tongue and through to the long finish. There is oak here, but it is swamped by the fruit which allows nothing to stand in its way. An exceptional wine of muscular definition and streamlined length of flavour. A very impressive first release: bravo.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021 (97 points + special value)

Wyjup Collection 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon
“Single-vineyard cabernet with a distinctly inky countenance – this is a wall-to-wall flavour that dives deep into the palate and soars long. Margaret and Frankland Rivers may take all the limelight for cabernet, but there are a handful of premium producers in Mount Barker doing the subregion very proud indeed, this being one of them. You can taste the sunshine here, but the cool nights are evident in the bright acidity, rounding this out to a very balanced yet intense wine that is built for the long haul.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021

Wyjup Collection 2020 Riesling (New Release September)
“From the Wyjup vineyard in Mount Barker. Picked at night, fermented to dry, left on lees in tank for 3 months prior to bottling. The unbelievably tempting nose of ripe fleshy citrus (lime and lemon), green-apple skin and fine white spice. The palate is taut and saline, with just a lingering curl of flavour left on the palate in the end. Ethereal, but joyful, too.” Erin Larkin, March 2021

Wyjup Collection 2019 Pinot Noir (New Release September)
“Red cherry, sarsaparilla, black pepper, bay leaf, sage and Szechuan peppercorns. The palate is both structurally stemmy and creamy; the layers of flavour tucked away into the folds of texture. The acid provides a cooling flourish throughout, embossed flush into the fruit. An elegant, structural and sophisticated pinot noir.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021

Wyjup Collection 2018 Shiraz

“Densely packed with flavour from every angle, this is seriously silky, seriously flavoursome and very long. An impressive wine that leads with red forest fruits and closes with the same. The acid and tannins are thick as thieves. The question is, is this too big, rich, or obvious? A beautiful wine, but could benefit from a whisker of restraint.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021

‘Angevin’ 2020 Riesling

“Fruit from Mount Barker. This is powder-fine and racy with concentrated fruit power. Quite an astoundingly beautiful and pure wine of poise, line and length.” – Erin Larkin, August 2021

‘Normand’ 2020 Pinot Noir (New Release)

“Raspberry, strawberry and a sprinkling of fresh coffee grounds. The tannins are very fine and leave a trace of metal/aniseed/licorice. The aftertaste fires back up with the cherry and strawberry. Pure and pretty, the colour is moving towards hot pink.” – – Erin Larkin, August 2021

‘Normand’ Pinot Noir 2020
New Release

Wyjup Collection Pinot Noir 2019
New Release

“Medium to full ruby colour with traces of purple and brick-red in the meniscus. The bouquet is likewise a bit forward, with potpourri and rose-petal aromas, showing a touch of development. The palate is full and rounded, soft and deliciously flavoursome, with an array of complex flavours revolving around dried herbs and dried flowers, mellow and multi-faceted and remarkably rewarding to drink already. Oak has been deftly handled. A very fine and gorgeously charming pinot.” 96 points – Huon Hooke, The Real Review<

“Who said the Great Southern doesn’t do great pinot? This is deep and complex with a rich, round palate and loads of charm. There’s some forward development in its potpourri, rose-petal and dried herb aromas, oak deftly controlled. Ready now but would reward keeping.” 96 points – Gourmet Traveller Wine Guide 2021

‘Lancaster’ Shiraz 2018
95 points – Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide
96 points – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

“Great Southern Shiraz (this wine is from Mount Barker) has a precision and a sense of inevitability about it: the depth and hue of the colour, the freshly picked fruit, the multi-spices, the cracked pepper, the persuasive tannins and the length.” 96 points – James Halliday, Wine Companion

Wyjup Collection Shiraz 2018

“Powerhouse Shiraz from an outstanding year. Deep, spicy, dark plum with dollops of chocolate. The palate is a maze of intricate workings with gravelly, loamy textures, savoury oak and tarry licorice. The dry, savoury tannins help to focus the palate while the oak holds it even closer. A wine for the future.” 96 Points – Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide 2021

“Impenetrably deep and purple, The nose is inky and closed at the moment, but with air, it reveals itself more. Plum, mulberry, pepper, and exotic spices like clove and aniseed meet the nose in suave harmony, and a mouthful follows those cues in a medium-bodied, seamless wine that builds across the palate to a very long, grippy finish” 96 points – Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review.

‘Aquitaine’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Award for ‘Best Cellaring’ below $50, WA Wine Guide 2021

“The greatest contemporary bargain in Australian cabernet is a classically stylish, medium-bodied, finely structured and superbly elegant wine of remarkable balance and poise. Scented with dusty cigar box and cedary scents of cassis, blackberries, dark plums, violets and dried herbs, it’s long, complete and finely crafted. Underpinned by fine, crunchy tannins, its pristine expression of cassis, dark plum and mulberries knits tightly with smoky cedar/cigar box oak, extending with exemplary length and style towards a lingering and artfully balanced finish. Top drawer stuff. Old World style and charm.” 96 Points – Jeremy Oliver

“This is clearly one of the best cabernets from Plantagenet in this range. It is classically structured and defined. Deep blackcurrant strikes in waves, then the ironstone minerality and black olive hit. Dark chocolate and black fruits merge seamlessly in the middle palate, while the fine, sinewy tannins extend to the finish.” 96 Points – Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide

“A magnificent rendition; the beautifully expressed bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, cigar, toasted nut and subtle spice notes, leading to a concentrated palate that offers excellent fruit purity as well as an elegant oak infusion. It’s supple and flavoursome backed by fine chalky tannins, making it classically structured and impressively long on the finish.” 96 Points – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit.

“From Mount Barker, and includes 4% shiraz, open-fermented whole berries, 13-38 days on skins, matured for 20 months in French oak (35% new). Fresh, juicy fruits jump around on the medium-bodied palate, tannins allied with acidity making their mark on the finish and aftertaste.” 93 points – James Halliday, Wine Companion

“A gently smoky edge and flinty dark berries abound here. There’s a cedary edge and then a wall of ripe dark berries. The oak glazes the palate with vanilla tones, and the rich core of ripe dark berries hold long.” 93 points – James Suckling

Wyjup Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
5 Stars, Winestate, October 2020
Award for ‘Best Cellaring’ above $50, WA Wine Guide 2021

“Wonderful expression of the essence of Cabernet. The aroma is a lovely combination of liqueur cherry, black currant, and tobacco leaf. The palate seamlessly hugs together with its tanning and oak cloak. Has brilliant brightness and energy. Firm, minerally thread of oyster shell and fresh seaweed. It is so complex.” 97 points – Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide 2021

‘Tony Smith’ Shiraz 2018

“In the blink of an eye, the new owners have released a wine that pays worthy tribute to Plantagenet founder Tony Smith. It is sourced from the Bouverie vineyard, which was planted back in 1968, making it one of the oldest in the Great Southern. A deep mix of gravelly dark berry with a little edgy graphite and ironstone. A lovely perfumed, spicy note mix greets immediately. The palate is tightly wound yet generous with immense power and concentrated depth of fruit Oak and tannin combination works its magic to hold the line through to a very long finish.” 97 points – Ray Jordan, The West

‘Lionel Samson’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

“The intention is that this wine will only be released from the best vintages, and 2018 was certainly one of the very best. Sourced from the Wyjup vineyard planted in 1971. Leafy, wild fruit aromas with a mix of bay leaf and meaty tobacco and black olive. It’s compelling stuff from the outset. The palate has excellent structure, based on the deeply concentrated medium to full-bodied fruit and supported with slick, fine tannins and a neat oak addition. A regal and polished cabernet worthy of a first release.” 98 points – Ray Jordan, The West

Red Revival – Ray Jordan

When Tom Wisdom joined Plantagenet as managing director three years ago, things started to happen. There was a new sense of urgency about the place with a rejuvenation of existing wines and the emergence of new wines that moved into the upper echelon.

Earlier this year, Wisdom and his wife, Jo, acquired the Plantagenet brand and outstanding Wyjup vineyard from the owners’ Lionel Samson Sadleir’s Group. Plantagenet was planted by Tony Smith in 1971 and is one of the pioneering producers of the Great Southern wine region.

Wisdom is a sixth-generation descendant of Lionel Samson himself, so he is well placed and well aware of the importance and significance of acquisition, approaching it with a clear intention to build on the history of the place and the region to pursue the premium end of the market. The process began in 2019 with the release of the Wyjup Collection, which maximises the old-vine fruit being sourced from the 50-year-old Wyjup vineyard.

And now comes the release of two icon wines named in honour of Lionel Samson and Plantagenet founder Tony Smith. Smith, who emigrated from England in 1960, was a tireless contributor to the development of the Great Southern wine industry, making a significant contribution to the region’s wines and to the broader wine industry, sitting on countless boards and committees.

Both wines are fitting recognition of the contributions both men made to the state. Plantagenet makes a broad range of reds and whites, but for me, it is cabernet sauvignon and shiraz that are the strong suits.

The Icons of Plantagenet

The Icons released at the Mount Barker Cellar Door and online 5.6.2021 embody the story of Plantagenet Wines’ enduring story and the quality of its single-vineyard old vines.  Wines are released only from exceptional vintages, and the 2018 vintage was indeed sublime.

“Our Icons reflect the significant contribution of two pioneers that have shaped the lineage of Plantagenet. Firstly Tony Smith, a distinguished leader of the WA Wine Industry and founder of Plantagenet. Secondly, Lionel Samson, the founder of Lionel Samson & Son, the oldest family business in WA, merchants, established when Western Australia was colonised in 1829.

These wines reflect the ultimate potential of our two oldest vineyards and are single vineyard, single block wines only made in exceptional vintages such as 2018. The ‘Tony Smith’ is vinified from the original Shiraz block from the Bouverie Vineyard planted in 1968. The ‘Lionel Samson’ is vinified from the first Cabernet Sauvignon block from the Wyjup Vineyard planted in 1971.

Crafted to evolve over a long cellaring period and celebrated in the years to come.”Tom Wisdom, Owner, Plantagenet Wines

The history…

Tony Smith was born in England and migrated to Australia in 1960 before settling in Mount Barker, Western Australia, on a farming property he named ‘Bouverie’. In 1974 Tony founded Plantagenet Wines, and a legacy was born. An apple packing shed in Mount Barker township became the first commercial winery in the Great Southern region. Tony is regarded as a pioneer of the modern WA wine industry and has been awarded the Jack Mann Memorial Medal, an Honorary Industry patron and life membership of the Mount Barker Wine industry Association. The ‘Tony Smith’ 2018 Shiraz celebrates his passion, vision and foresight…read Tony’s story here.

Lionel Samson was persuaded to come to Fremantle by Captain Stirling, the founder of the Swan River Colony. It was a challenging beginning; despite this, Lionel was among the first to receive land, and was appointed postmaster before setting up a merchant business. He received the first liquor license, which is still in existence in Western Australia. Presently, the business remains 100% family-owned and continues to thrive. His tradition and spirit live on in this Iconic wine ‘Lionel Samson’ Cabernet Sauvignon, as does his legacy due to a sixth-generation Samson, Tom Wisdom, retaining family ownership alongside his wife Jo in March 2021….read the Wisdom’s story here.

Plantagenet Wines – Changes Hands

PLANTAGENET WINES CHANGES HANDS IN SAMSON FAMILY ACQUISITION

Plantagenet Wines – the first commercial winery in the Great Southern region has today (Friday 26th March 2021) been acquired by Tom & Jo Wisdom.

Included in the acquisition of the award-winning Western Australian brand is the complete wine inventory including all current wine and cellar reserves, the premium low-yielding pioneer ‘Wyjup Vineyard’, and leasehold over the current cellar door site on Albany Highway in Mount Barker.

A 6th generation descendant of Lionel Samson and former Director of Western Australia’s oldest family business, Lionel Samson Sadleirs Group, Tom Wisdom led Plantagenet Wines as the Managing Director for three years.

With extensive backgrounds in viticulture and decades of experience in the wine industry, both Tom & Jo are passionate about retaining the Plantagenet brand within the Samson family and building on the legacy of the uniquely West Australian brand.

‘Having been part of the wine industry and Plantagenet journey for many years now, we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to take the reins and guide this historic brand into the future.

‘Our vision is to continue crafting exceptional wines that truly reflect the outstanding potential of the Great Southern wine region whilst honouring the history and long-standing traditions upon which Plantagenet has been built’, said Managing Director, Tom Wisdom.

As part of the purchase, Tom & Jo acquired the ‘Wyjup Vineyard’ – the centerpiece of Plantagenet’s vineyard estates. The wines produced from this vineyard are considered the best natural expression of the Mount Barker terroir.

‘The Wyjup Collection goes to the heart of Plantagenet as a brand – the wines in this collection are the most refined and prestigious we produce each vintage. Each wine is a true celebration of our pioneering history as the oldest winery in the Great Southern region and we look forward to building on this well into the future, said Director, Jo Wisdom.

Planted in 1971, Wyjup Vineyard totals 20 hectares, with the 50-year-old vines producing low yields and the highest quality Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz, Malbec, and Chardonnay. The meticulous care taken in the vineyards and the harnessing of the cooler climate within the region continue to result in award-winning wines year on year.

Samson Family Retains Ownership

‘For us, Plantagenet is a legacy brand and one that we’re really looking forward to building on in the coming years. We’ve got the release of our Icon Range early this year which has been heralded as one of the best vintages on record in 2018, as well as some other unique projects and releases that we look forward to announcing in due course,’ said Tom Wisdom.
